A Drifting Life is his monumental memoir eleven years in the making, beginning with his experiences as a child in Osaka, growing up as part of a country burdened by the shadows of World War II.\n\nSpanning fifteen years from August 1945 to June 1960, Tatsumi’s stand-in protagonist, Hiroshi, faces his father’s financial burdens and his parents’ failing marriage, his jealous brother’s deteriorating health, and the innumerable pitfalls that await him in the competitive manga market of mid-twentieth-century Japan. He dreams of following in the considerable footsteps of his idol, the manga artist Osamu Tezuka (Astro Boy, Apollo’s Song, Ode to Kirihito, Buddha)—with whom Tatsumi eventually became a peer and, at times, a stylistic rival. As with his short-story collection, A Drifting Life is designed by Adrian Tomine.\n\n*Source: Drawn & Quarterly*","published":{"start_date":"1995-03-21","end_date":"2006-12-28","start_date_is_estimated":false,"end_date_is_estimated":false},"status":"completed","is_licensed":true,"content_rating":"safe","type":"manga","original_language":"ja","rating":79.0633333333333,"popularity":{"global":{"current":6080,"history":{"1d":6090,"1w":6081,"1mo":5957,"3mo":6050,"6mo":6109,"1y":4731}},"type":{"current":4008,"history":{"1d":4017,"1w":4027,"1mo":4004,"3mo":4187,"6mo":4504,"1y":3791}}},"last_updated_at":"2026-10-14T02:28:26.074Z","source":{"anilist":{"id":43419,"rating":8,"rating_normalized":80},"anime_planet":{"id":"a-drifting-life","rating":4,"rating_normalized":80},"anime_news_network":{"id":null,"rating":null,"rating_normalized":null},"kitsu":{"id":24075,"rating":7.828,"rating_normalized":78},"manga_updates":{"id":"qsk2wt7","rating":7.8,"rating_normalized":78},"my_anime_list":{"id":13419,"rating":7.9,"rating_normalized":79},"shikimori":{"id":13419,"rating":7.91,"rating_normalized":79}},"publishers":[{"id":4176,"name":"Drawn & Quarterly","canonical_url":"https://mangabaka.org/publisher/4176/Drawn-Quarterly","language":"en","note":"1 Physical Omnibus; Complete | 1 Second Edition Omnibus; Complete"},{"id":32,"name":"Kodansha","canonical_url":"https://mangabaka.org/publisher/32/Kodansha","language":"ja","note":"2013"},{"id":2484,"name":"Mandarake","canonical_url":"https://mangabaka.org/publisher/2484/Mandarake","language":"ja","note":"1995"},{"id":3016,"name":"Seirin Kogeisha","canonical_url":"https://mangabaka.org/publisher/3016/Seirin-Kogeisha","language":"ja","note":"2008"}],"rating_count":2760,"final_volume":2,"total_chapters":49,"titles":[{"language":"en","traits":["official"],"title":"A Drifting Life","is_primary":true},{"language":"de","traits":[],"title":"Gegen den Strom - Eine Autobiografie in Bildern","is_primary":true},{"language":"ja-Latn","traits":["native"],"title":"Gekiga Hyouryuu","is_primary":true},{"language":"vi","traits":[],"title":"Hanyut","is_primary":true},{"language":"es","traits":[],"title":"Vida à Deriva","is_primary":true},{"language":"it","traits":[],"title":"Una Vita Tra I Margini","is_primary":true},{"language":"fr","traits":[],"title":"Une vie dans les marges","is_primary":true},{"language":"pl","traits":[],"title":"Życie.
